The ear tag only shows one side, "until june 2010" the other side said "do not eat".
According to AZ Game and Fish this elk had been found with an arrow in it by Forest Highlands. The drug used to sedate them stays in the body for 4-6 months. During the capture we cut off their antlers, put ear tags in them and spray painted their sides with “ do not shoot”. The ear tag should say between both sides, “ do not eat until June 2010” to make sure any residual drug has passed from the elk’s system and it would be safe to consume again. Basically, we wanted the elk to look as unappealing to a hunter as possible so they would pass on taking the animal.
